Blinds, shutters or curtains: how to choose
Three good options, three different jobs. Here is how to work out which one belongs in each room of your home.

Start with the job, not the look
Most people start by picking a look and then discover it does not do what they needed. It is far easier the other way around. Before you think about colour or material, work out what the window actually has to do: block light, filter it, provide privacy during the day, keep heat out, or simply finish the room.
Once that is clear the choice usually narrows to one or two options, and the decision becomes about budget and taste rather than guesswork.
What each one does best
Shutters are the most permanent option. They are fitted to the window frame, adjust with a tilt of the blade, and show off the shape of the window rather than covering it. They suit rooms where you want a fixed, architectural finish and precise control over light and airflow.
Blinds are the most flexible and generally the most economical. There is a blind type for almost every situation, from a simple roller in a bedroom to a panel glide across a wide sliding door.
Curtains and sheers add softness, warmth and acoustic damping that hard window coverings cannot. They are the only option that meaningfully changes how a room sounds, and layering sheers with blockout drapes gives you daytime privacy and night-time darkness from the same window.
A room-by-room starting point
- Bedrooms: blockout roller blinds or blockout curtains, often layered with sheers. Prioritise how dark the room goes.
- Living areas: sheers for daytime privacy, or plantation shutters if you want a fixed architectural look.
- Bathrooms and laundries: PVC or aluminium shutters, or a moisture-tolerant blind. Avoid timber and heavy fabrics.
- Kitchens: something wipeable and away from heat. PVC shutters or a roller in a practical fabric.
- Wide sliding doors: panel glide blinds, vertical blinds, or wave-fold sheers on a track.
- Outdoor and alfresco: outdoor blinds such as Ziptrak or Zipscreen, which are a different product class entirely.
The trade-offs nobody mentions
Shutters are an investment and they stay with the house. That is a strength if you plan to stay, and worth thinking about if you might move.
Blinds are easier to change later, but a cheap blind on a large window will look cheap. Spend where the window is big or highly visible.
Curtains need more space than people expect. A curtain needs somewhere to stack back to when it is open, and without that wall space it will always cover part of the glass.
You do not have to pick just one
The best result in most homes is a combination. Shutters in the front rooms where they are seen from the street, blockout blinds in the bedrooms, sheers in the living area, and outdoor blinds to make the patio usable year round.

Common questions
Which is best value: blinds, shutters or curtains?
Blinds are usually the lowest cost per window and shutters the highest, with curtains varying enormously depending on fabric and fullness. Shutters last longest and stay with the property, so on a long enough horizon the gap narrows.
Can you mix blinds and curtains on the same window?
Yes, and it is very common. A roller or Roman blind handles light control while curtains or sheers soften the frame and add insulation. Layering sheers with blockout drapes is the most popular combination in Gold Coast homes.
